FORT WAYNE, Indiana -- A young Guatemalan boy born deaf can now hear, thanks to a missionary who brought him to America.
Once Erin Van Oordt met seven-year-old Henry Rivera, her next mission became giving him the gift of hearing. Van Oordt received help to get the process started from Ray of Hope Medical Missions, a not-for-profit group in Indiana. The $40,000 equipment for the operation was donated by Advanced Bionics.
"I had a flashback to the first time I met him, when he couldn't hear me, and he could this time. So everything we've done in the past three years came flooding back. It was all worth it," Van Oordt said.
Although he can now hear, the journey isn't over for Henry. He has at least several more months in America as he works on his speech and learns to understand what he is hearing.
