Rise Above Ministries shares a love of Christ, tattoos and body piercings.

Pastor Skip Brooks explains, "The bible talks about it's not the outer appearance, but the heart of man that God looks upon and we believe in that."

But when 37 year old Pastor Brooks suffered a heart attack this summer, the congregation took a hard look at their outer appearance and decided the tattoos are fine, but the extra weight must go.

They weighed in on a commercial scale and started exercising and taking nutritional classes.

At Whole Foods, nutritionist Suzy Holleron is taking members on nutritional tours to educate them about healthy eating.

"I recommend eating many different colors of fruits and vegetables every day," Hollerman said. She also encouraged members to try bulk foods because it makes it possible to try things in small quantities. Trying out new things is a top recommendation.

Hollerman asked if the members had ever used ginger in cooking. Most were not familiar with the spicy root.

The congregation is in the midst of a 6-week program to lose weight and assume a healthier lifestyle. Many are already noticing a difference.

"We're actually watching our portions, eating more vegetables," said Liz Vasquez.

"Since it started I wake up at 6 every morning and my friend and I walk for an hour. I used to just sit around. Now I can't see my stomach sticking out anymore, I can see my feet! I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but it's really encouraging," said Nicole Balmos.

According to associate pastor Basilio Carrillio, "Everybody is saying they feel better, just knowing they get out and do some exercise. Knowing they're making themselves healthier inspires them to do more and hopefully it will continue."
