The PepsiCo company says it will remove a controversial food additive from certain flavors of its Gatorade sports drink.

The change comes after numerous consumer complaints about brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a synthetic ingredient which is found in fire retardant.

The additive is banned in most European countries and Japan, but not in the United States. Studies on rats suggest the chemical can build up in fatty tissues and cause reproductive and behavioral problems. BVO is only used in citrus flavors of Gatorade.

The new formula will be available within the next few months.
