Blood center in ‘critical need' of Type O blood

AUSTIN – The sole provider of blood to Central Texas says it is in critical need of O Negative and O Positive blood.

We Are Blood said that the need will be high for O- and O+ blood over the next two weeks with school starting, Labor Day weekend and the potential for severe weather. We Are Blood provides blood to more than 40 hospitals and medical facilities in 10 counties.

“O Negative and O Positive blood are most important due to their universal tendencies. O Negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused into any patient. O Positive blood is the most common blood type, which means many of our Central Texas patients can receive it,” the provider said in a statement.

We Are Blood is asking all eligible blood donors - even if they are unsure of their blood type - to visit a donation location as soon as possible. Donors who give blood or attempt to give blood at one of the donation locations before Aug. 28 will receive a voucher for a free P. Terry’s milkshake. Eligible donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 115 pounds.

People can donate at any of the mobile drives or at one of the three We Are Blood locations in the Austin area:

4300 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin

3100 W. Slaughter Lane, Austin

2132 North Mays, Ste. 900, Round Rock
