On Tuesday, several city leaders were expected to ask the citizens of Austin to approve a potential bond package in order to purchase the Lions Golf Course in west Austin.

"Greenspace is important to the city, parks are important to the city, golf courses are not precisely parks, but they provide the same function, they provide a little bit of relief in the urban landscape," said Austin City Councilman Lee Leffingwell, one of three council members supporting the proposed city buyout of the course.

Leffingwell also cited the historic significance of the Lions Course nicknamed "Muny" by many of its users.

Golf greats such as Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw were fixtures there in years past.  The course also boasts of being one of the first public courses to integrate racially.

The 155-acre course was built in 1924 and is owned by the University of Texas.

The University of Texas commissioned a study on redeveloping the course but has remained close lipped as to what the options could include.

Austin's City Manager has been asked to come up with a list of city owned land that could work in a land swap with UT.

Councilman Leffingwell says the price of the course could reach at least $100,000,000.

The idea may be a tough sell to citizens we found using another popular greenspace, Auditorium Shores.  Most of the folks we spoke to say they love the course but would have a difficult time justifying spending 9 figures on the place.

"I think it's a wonderful, I learned to play golf there and I still think it's not worth it. That was back in 1958," says Jerry Schmidt of Austin.

The City of Austin is leasing the course from the University of Texas until 2019.

Any purchase of the course will have to be approved by Austin voters.
