TxDOT videos warn of drunk driving consequences

The Texas Department of Transportation has released a new video campaign which revisits the case of Reginald Stephey. It's a sobering reminder to any graduates planning parties over Memorial Day.

The former Lake Travis high school football player remains in prison for killing two people and severely injuring two others while driving drunk seven years ago.

TxDOT interviewed both Jackie Saburido, one of the survivors, and Stephey right after Stephey was convicted. In this latest video, TxDOT re-interviews them both to see how much their lives have changed.

The video is called Consequences. It combines the stories of two lives brought together by the same tragic mistake.

In 2003, Stephey spoke from prison about crashing into a car carrying four people when he was just 18.

"I had a few beers. I was not falling down drunk and weaving all over the place but it was more than enough to impair me," he said.

The victims' car burst into flames upon impact. Natalia Bennett and Laura Guerrero died on the scene.

In 2001, Stephey got two seven-year sentences for intoxication manslaughter.

In a new video called Aftermath, a sequel to the video consequences, the former football star spoke again from behind bars about present day life five years after his conviction.

"I probably miss the most, I miss my family, my friends, people that I've known all my life," Stephey said.

But Stephey's life isn't the only one that changed that night.

Jackie Saburido, was a promising college student at the time survived the fiery crash, but she still has no ears, nose, hands or face.

She's been through 50 operations and still has some to go.

"One doesn't know what's worse -- to die or to be left in this condition. There are times when I wonder why was I left like this? Why didn't I die? Why did I remain here?" she said.

"I can get up here and I can tell you not to drink. I can tell you not to drink and drive. But in the end the decision is going to be yours, and you have to make that choice. So I hope you make the right decision and not the same decision that I did," Stephey said.
