Austin attorney charged with having child porn

An Austin attorney is out on bond after being arrested in a case of child pornography.

FBI agents claim 42-year-old Douglas Michael Stum’s computer held thousands of images of children engaged in sexual activity.  Some of the victims in the images are infants.

The FBI says Stum’s name came up in another federal investigation in a different part of the country.  Investigators visited Stum’s house in June of last year and took away two computers that belonged to him. Court documents show the computers held thousands of images and videos of child pornography.

On Thursday, eight months after his computers were seized, Stum was at work at the law firm of Diamond, McCarthy, Taylor, Finley & Lee in northwest Austin when federal agents showed up to arrest him.

According to his employer, Stum was employed as a bankruptcy attorney for seven years.  No evidence was seized from the law firm.

One expert in child abuse, Amy Carr of the Center for Child Protection, says it is happening a lot more than most people realize.

“More than 5-children are confirmed victims of abuse every single day in Travis County,” she said.

The Center for Child Protection interviewed more than 600 children who were victims of sexual abuse last year.  The victims, say counselors, are getting younger.

“The average age of the child that we see here at the Center for Child Protection is about eight-years old, but we do interview children as young as two, and we would interview them younger if they could talk,” said Carr.

Carr’s message to parents is to “to be vigilant … they need to know who their children hang out with.  They need to watch out for their children.  They need to know where they're going to be.”

If convicted, Stum faces up to 10-years in federal prison.
