(AUSTIN, TX) January 19, 2011 – Texas Monthly and the Austin Film Festival (AFF) are proud to announce their partnership for the 2011 “Where I’m From” Short Film Contest. This is the second time Texas Monthly has held this contest, but the first time the magazine has worked with the Austin Film Festival to bring it to a wider audience of filmmakers and film-goers in Texas.

Entries can either be narrative or documentary in style and should be films of ten minutes or less, highlighting a sense of place and depicting where the filmmakers, subjects or characters are from in Texas. Films should depict what it’s like to grow up in Texas. Semi-finalists will be showcased at www.texasmonthly.com beginning on July 15, and the public will be able to vote for their favorites until August 15.

Texas Monthly Editor, Jake Silverstein, said of the partnership, "We are excited to again be sponsoring this contest and are thrilled to be able to partner with AFF to expand the competition and discover fresh and talented filmmakers. It'll be great fun to see how everyone interprets our ‘Where I'm From’ theme.”

“Texas is an inspiring place to come from, and regardless of whether or not you still live here or have moved off to LA or New York, we want to see your story,” says Kelly Williams, Film Program Director at AFF.

The top 10 to 12 shorts selected by Texas Monthly and AFF as finalists, which will include the top two selected by the public voting, will be screened at an official short film program during the 18th Austin Film Festival, October 20-27. 2011. One grand prize winner and two runners-up will be chosen by a panel of judges comprised of industry professionals, including Mike Simpson, Partner at WME Entertainment and Orian Williams, Producer of Control and Shadow of a Vampire.
