Sweet Smell of Success

Presented in part with The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, keeper of Ernest Lehman’s archive, film critic Kenneth Turan will screen and discuss Lehman’s brilliant story of a powerful but unethical Broadway columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) who coerces unscrupulous press agent Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) into breaking up his sister's romance with a jazz musician. Lancaster and Curtis both played against their personas at the time, but both delivered two of the most memorable performances of their careers. After the film’s release, it went on to gain somewhat of a cult status and eventually in 1993, it was named to the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress and in 2002, it actually became a Broadway musical.

Twelve Monkeys

Distinguished Screenwriter recipient David Peoples co-authored Twelve Monkeys with his wife, Janet Peoples inspired by the French short film, La Jatée. Set in the year 2035, when five billion people have been wiped out by an unknown and lethal virus. The remainder of the population is forced to live underground because the surface is toxic. A convict, James Cole, volunteers to go back in time to 1996 and discover the origin of the pandemic, supposedly spread by the mysterious “Army of the Twelve Monkeys.” Unfortunately, Cole lands in 1990 and is locked up in a mental institution. There, he meets Dr. Kathryn Railly and Jeffrey Goines, the insane son of a famous virologist. After being recalled to his present time twice, he is correctly transported to 1996 where he must convince Dr. Railly that he is from the future and that the world is in peril from Jeffrey’s father. Janet and David Peoples will be in attendance.
