AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The U.S. Justice Department says it will monitor portions of the early voting period for the Nov. 6 general election in Dallas and Harris counties to ensure compliance with the Voting Rights Act.

The Justice Department said Friday its personnel will monitor polling place activities in those two counties. The department deploys hundreds of observers every year to monitor elections across the country.

Early voting begins Monday across Texas.

The Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination.
