AUSTIN -- A new agreement in Austin is expanding transportation service to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The car sharing company car2go set up a fleet of its cars at The Parking Spot near ABIA.

Thursday marked the launch of the new service.

car2go officials say customers asked for more service.

“The airport is a natural extension because it’s a place where a lot of our members are going,” said spokesperson for car2go Katie Stafford. “Our members are city dwellers. They live in cities. They visit cities so this makes sense for them. It gives them a convenient option to get to the airport.”

The agreement with The Parking Spot is the first of its kind in North America for the car sharing company.

“There are more and more people moving to [Austin]. So as that happens, as more people move here and visit here we need to find cost-efficient ways, smart ways, for them to get around town and to the airport is one of the important ways to do that,” said Stafford. “We have an agreement with The Parking Spot. Their customers don’t have to pay for parking, and they just pay a $5 convenience fee. This saves a lot of money for people who don’t want to pay for parking.”

Instead of paying for a taxi, taking a bus or paying for daily parking at the airport, car2go members can pick up one of the cars in town and drive themselves to the reserved parking or head out from the airport into town. Daily parking fees are waived.

If you fly to other U.S. cities with car2go -- Washington, D.C., Miami, San Diego, Portland or Seattle -- your same membership is good, though Austin is the only airport with the service. car3go also has locations in Canada and Europe. Membership is good there too, but members need to call ahead and get the correct card.

The cars can fit two people in the front seats, and the back is can accommodate most suitcases and carry on bags.

The service is limited to members of the car2go program. The company recommends its members make a reservation and check availability before their scheduled flight. Stafford says a crew is designated to monitoring the fleet at The Parking Spot.
