AUSTIN – Area construction and growing competition from more bars and clubs popping up around the city are taking a bite out of Austin’s Warehouse District, so now business owners there are doing something to change the trend.
“The Warehouse District tends to be more of the professional scene as opposed to 6th Street which tends to be the younger crowd,” said Matt Carter, a bartender and manager at The Hangar.
For the past couple of weeks the majority of Warehouse District businesses have been participating in what’s called “Warehouse Wednesdays.”
They’re trying to combat a 20 percent loss some business owners say they are now seeing in the area because of construction and other factors.
Now on Wednesdays, Warehouse District establishments will highlight drink and food specials, live music and other perks they hope will lure in more business.
“What we're trying to do is pretty much pull people and have them pretty much being comfortable with being downtown and not them thinking it's all 6th Street,” said Tyler Naumann with Peche.
Matt Carter told KVUE that “Warehouse Wednesdays” will last indefinitely and that most Warehouse District establishments are participating.
