Police arrest suspect in fatal hit-and-run

No leads in woman's death overnight

AUSTIN - Police have arrested the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run of a woman Nov. 2, and are still searching for other people that may have been involved.

APD said Thursday afternoon that Zachary Paul Denson Looke, 27, was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of capital murder in connection to the death of Mary Piette, 62. Police responded to the 5300 block of Interstate 35 northbound service road for a crash around 1:30 a.m. and found Piette lying in the parking lot.

Witnesses told police that Piette and Looke had been involved in a crash and that Piette got into a verbal confrontation with Looke and "at least two passengers." Eventually, the people in the other car got back in before running over Piette and drove off. Piette was transported to University Medical Center-Brackenridge by Austin-Travis County EMS, where she died around 2 a.m. Nov. 2.

Police said it was discovered in their investigation that Piette had been killed in the commission of a robbery, and that they are looking for the suspect vehicle and the other passengers in the vehicle. Police said the suspect vehicle was described as a four-door sedan.

"We don't know why she was out at 1:30 in the morning on a Wednesday," APD Lt. Justin Newsom said. "That could be part of her normal behavior, her normal patterns, but that's the kind of stuff we need to know and don't."

Looke is being held in the Travis County Jail with no bond.

Anyone with information on this murder is asked to call the APD Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588, or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
