Man tosses gun from car during traffic stop, police say

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas - An Austin man has been charged for allegedly throwing a gun out of his vehicle's window after police stopped him for speeding.

The arrest affidavit for Mark Dawon Brown, 25, states a Pflugerville police observed his vehicle going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone along Grand Avenue Parkway around 1:35 a.m. Nov. 22. The officer said he conducted a traffic stop along Strontian Pass, and called for backup after speaking to Brown and smelling marijuana.

According to the affidavit, the second officer saw a handgun lying on the sidewalk next to Brown's vehicle, and police said a review of dash camera footage showed the suspect throwing the gun out the passenger window just after he stopped.

Police noted Brown's criminal history indicated several felony convictions, and that he is on probation for a conviction of assault involving family violence.

Pflugerville police have charged Brown with unlawful possession firearm by felon and tampering/fabricating physical evidence, both third-degree felonies. A current booking photo is not available as of 1:15 p.m. Monday.
