Tracking prostitution arrests in Austin

Prevalence of prostitution in Austin

AUSTIN - So far this year, Austin Police have made 114 prostitution-related arrests compared to 144 for the entire year in 2015 and 142 in 2014.

Many of the locations of the arrests are places known for prostitution including South Congress with eight arrests so far this year, Georgian Drive with six arrests and five arrests on East Powell Lane.

But the top spot is 1500 Rutherford Lane where there have been ten prostitution-related arrests so far this year. The address is also home to the Austin Police Department Recruiting Center.

An APD investigator told KVUE that this address, 1500 Rutherford Lane, is used when there isn’t an exact address for a crime, usually because the business could be online.

The investigator said that while most prostitution arrests happen on the street, often with a drug component involved, most of the cases start online.

As the city grows, so does the market for prostitutes, according to the investigator, which makes it even tougher for police to crack down on the crime.
