Suspect in Harris Co. deputy killing previously arrested in Austin

AUSTIN – The man charged in the shooting death of a Harris County Sheriff's deputy was arrested in Austin in 2012, according to KVUE's partners at the Austin American-Statesman.

Shannon J. Miles, 30, was arrested after a disturbance at the Salvation Army shelter at 501 East Eighth Street.

According to the Statesman, Miles got into an argument with another man when they were watching TV. Witnesses told police Miles had punched and kicked a man who was later found on the floor. The victim was taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge with critical injuries.

Miles was arrested, but found mentally incompetent to stand trial and sent to North Texas State Hospital. He was declared mentally competent in 2013, but the case was dismissed pending further investigation.

Harris County prosecutors allege Miles shot Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth 15 times outside a Houston-area gas station on Aug. 28.
