Woman charged in bank robbery needed money to bail out boyfriend, police say

AUSTIN – The woman charged in a Friday morning bank robbery in South Austin allegedly told police she planned to use the money to get her boyfriend out of jail.

Court documents say Stephanie Benavides, 23, walked into the Chase Bank along the 700 block of East Stassney Lane around 9:20 a.m. Oct 13, showed a black handgun – later discovered to have been a toy – and demanded money. Police said Benavides fled with an undisclosed sum of money, and that a witness followed her and called 911. Officers were able to locate and detain her, as well as locating the gun and the money. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Police noted in the affidavit that Benavides said she was 33 weeks pregnant and was transported to South Austin Hospital after complaining of stomach pains. Benavides allegedly confessed to the robbery while at the hospital, and police have charged her with felony robbery by threat. The affidavit stated her bond was set at $35,000.
