AUSTIN – Police have charged a Georgetown man in connection to a 2015 sex assault case in Austin after police say DNA testing was recently completed.
According to court documents filed Oct. 17, 2017, police received a report on July 12, 2015, from a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by her Lyft driver who was later identified by police as 36-year-old Angel Interial. A Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE) was performed and DNA collected. The affidavit states the victim told police she was out drinking downtown with friends, and got a ride home alone from a driver named “Angel.” The victim added she was “in and out” and did not remember everything that happened, but did recall feeling a sharp pain on her chest and seeing Angel with his head in her chest. The woman told police she woke up around 5 a.m. the next day and pieced together that she had been assaulted.
Police said the victim was able to provide a screenshot of the Lyft receipt, as well as a photo of Interial. The affidavit said police served a DNA search warrant on Interial on Sept. 16, 2015, and that police were informed the testing was complete on Oct. 11, 2017. Police noted the DNA sample obtained from Interial matched a sample taken from the woman’s SAFE.
Interial has been charged with felony sexual assault, and online records at the Williamson County Jail state he was booked Oct. 16. Bond has been set at $60,000.
On Tuesday, Fran Irwin, director of community affairs for the City of Cedar Park, said that Interial worked for the city as a part-time AV tech in the media/communications department. She said he has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
Lyft spokesperson Alexandra LaManna issued the following statement:
These allegations are extremely upsetting. We have absolutely no tolerance for this type of behavior on the Lyft platform -- the safety of our community is our top priority. As soon as this incident was reported to us in 2015, we permanently deactivated the driver and worked closely with the authorities during their investigation.
