CrimeStoppers tip leads to cocaine bust, police say

AUSTIN – An Austin man is facing felony charges after police say they found cocaine, a stolen pistol and thousands of dollars in cash in his southeast Austin home.

The arrest affidavit for Jose Hernandez, 36, states officers received a tip through CrimeStoppers that resulted in them executing a search warrant at a residence along the 1800 block of Woodland Avenue on Sept. 11. Police said they located “white powdery substances in various plastic bags” hidden in books with hollow centers. The powder tested positive for cocaine and police said the combined weight was approximately 184.21 grams (around 6.5 ounces).

Police also noted in the affidavit that a 9mm pistol that had been reported stolen in Travis County and more than $16,000 in cash was found in the home. Hernandez allegedly told police the money was from selling drugs.

Hernandez was arrested on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. Bond was set at $40,000, and online records at the Travis County Jail do not list Hernandez as an inmate as of early Thursday afternoon. A booking photo was not available as of 1 p.m. Thursday.
