El Salvador murder suspect charged in Austin assault

AUSTIN - Police allege a man wanted for murder in El Salvador put a knife to another man’s throat and threatened to cut him up on March 18.

According to KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman, Hugo Rolando Sol-Cortez, 23, was arrested Saturday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The affidavit states the victim was renting a room at a mobile home park when Sol-Cortez and another person busted into the room and began punching and kicking him.

The two then pulled out handguns and held them to the victim’s head while asking about text messages the victim sent to Sol-Cortez’s girlfriend. The affidavit states the victim said they were sent accidentally, and they tied him up with a shirt and put a belt over his mouth. At one point, Sol-Cortez put a knife in the victim’s mouth and cut him.

According to the affidavit, the victim was released after he promised the men he would not call police, but immediately ran to the mobile home park’s office and called 911.

The Statesman reported Sol-Cortez was handed over to the U.S. Marshals after learning he was wanted on a murder charge in El Salvador. A booking photo of Sol-Cortez is not available as of early Monday afternoon.
