Four charged in Bee Cave robbery

BEE CAVE, Texas – Two men and two women have been charged with felony robbery after police say they stole a paint sprayer Monday and fled in a vehicle that had been reported stolen.

Court documents state police responded to the Sherwin Williams around 5:45 p.m. Sept. 18 for the reported robbery. While responding, the affidavits state police were notified the suspects’ vehicle had been reported stolen in Austin. A Travis County Sheriff’s deputy located the vehicle and stopped it on Palomino Ridge Drive, more than four miles from the scene of the robbery. The people in the vehicle, identified in the affidavits as John Waring, 43; Derek Allen Russell, 34; Ivy Melendrez, 34; and Kate Dennis, 35, were detained.

The manager of the Sherwin Williams told police he and a co-worker were moving merchandise from the storage area to the showroom floor when they heard a loud noise. The manager said he recognized the noise as a spray rig being carried, and pursued a man – later identified as Waring – into the parking lot. The manager said he was able to grab a wheel of the rig, but that Waring was able to pull it away and ran to the vehicle.

The affidavits state the manager said he caught up to Waring as he was trying to get it into the car, and that Waring “threw the spray rig over the passenger side door,” striking the manager in the hand. The manager said he memorized the car’s license plate as it fled, and that he saw three people in the car.

Court documents state Melendrez told police she and her husband planned to go to the Sherwin Williams obtain property so they could pay rent, and that she saw Waring struggle with the manager and did nothing to prevent the robbery. Russell allegedly told police he received the keys for the car from a neighbor, but was not able to give any information on the neighbor’s identity.

Online records and affidavits state Melendrez is being held on $10,000 bond and Waring on $30,000 bond. Russell is facing an additional charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle, and his combined bond has been set at $28,000. Bond information was not available for Dennis. Booking photos for the suspects were not available as of 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.
