AUSTIN - A Guatemalan man has been arrested and charged in connection with an April 6 murder in southeast Austin, U.S. Marshals say.
The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force said Jose Morales, 23, was arrested Friday night (April 7) along the 700 block of West William Cannon Drive without incident. An affidavit filed by Austin police states Morales got into an argument with three other men over parking spaces at the OK Corral night club. Police said the argument escalated into a physical altercation and vehicle chase inside the apartment complex at 1881 Grove Boulevard.
Police said two men attempted to flee Morales were stopped by the complex’s exit gate. Morales allegedly ambushed the men and fired multiple shots into the vehicle. Mariano Gonzalez-Lopez, 20, died from his injuries. Another 20-year-old man was taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge with what Austin-Travis County EMS described April 6 as “critical injuries.”
Police said they learned the details of the events that preceded the shooting from multiple eyewitnesses, and the identity of the suspect.
Marshals said Immigration and Customs Enforcement records show Morales “has no legal status in the United States.” Morales is being held in the Travis County Jail on $1 million bond and an ICE detainer. U.S. Marshals said ICE authorities are reviewing potential federal charges concerning his immigration status.
