Multiple guns found in truck after alleged road rage incident, police say

MUSTANG RIDGE, Texas -- A man who allegedly pointed a weapon at another driver on SH 130 earlier in November had eight other firearms in his truck, police said.

The affidavit for Daniel Pearce Mathews, 26, states Mustang Ridge police stopped his vehicle around 4:10 p.m. Nov. 22 after they received a 911 call claiming he had pointed a shotgun at another driver. Police said they located a rifle in the rear floorboard of the pickup that closely matched the weapon described to dispatchers.

Mathews allegedly told police he was driving southbound on SH 130 from Pflugerville when he tried to pass a white van on the right. He said the van's driver was shouting obscenities and making obscene gestures with his hands. Mathews told officers he moved to the passing lane and that the van tried to run him off the road.

Police said they contacted the initial caller, who told them he was driving southbound on SH 130 when he spotted a black pickup truck come out of the right lane and slam on his brakes, and then proceeded to pass vehicles on the shoulder. The caller told police he got alongside Mathews' pickup and threw his hands up in a questioning manner before Mathews pointed what the caller thought was a shotgun at him.

Mustang Ridge police said in Mathews' affidavit that they located a total of eight rifles and pistols in his truck. Several loaded magazines were also found throughout the vehicle, including the weapon the caller said was pointed at him. MRPD noted in the affidavit that the rifle had a round in the chamber.

Mathews has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The affidavit states his bond was set at $15,000, and he is not listed in the Travis County Jail as of Monday afternoon. A booking photo is currently not available.
