Man pleads guilty to slashing woman's throat outside H-E-B

AUSTIN - The man charged with slashing a woman’s throat in front of a South Austin H-E-B in May 2015 has been sentenced to 45 years in prison after entering a guilty plea.

According to KVUE’s partners at the Austin American-Statesman, Edward Bennett pleaded guilty to an aggravated robbery charge on Monday. He was set to go on trial Tuesday on an attempted murder charge in connection to the May 20, 2015 attack.

Bennett allegedly approached a woman outside the H-E-B at South Congress and Oltorf around 1:30 a.m., slashed her throat and stole her purse. A security guard took off his reflective vest and used it to put pressure on the woman’s neck. She was taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge and underwent surgery.

Police arrested Bennett on May 23 on attempted capital murder charges. KVUE reported at the time that his parole officer contacted APD to report he went missing from a transitional center shortly before the attack.
