AUSTIN - A man was arrested Thursday evening after police say he grabbed a female student and tried to carjack a UT staff member.
University of Texas police dispatch said it received several calls about an assault in Lot 70, located near 2000 Robert Dedman Drive shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday. Police said the man, who is not a UT student, approached a female student and grabbed her arm. The student yelled for help, and a nearby UT staff member approached them in a vehicle.
The man, whose name was not released by UTPD, then allegedly assaulted the staff member in order to take the vehicle. Officers arrived and reported seeing the man getting into the university vehicle. The man allegedly ignored officers’ commands to exit the vehicle. Officers used a Taser on the man, who then allegedly tried to assault officers as they were placing him in handcuffs.
UTPD said the student was not injured, and that the intervening staff member and several UTPD officers were treated for minor injuries.
This story will be updated when police identify the suspect and charges are announced.
