Suspect charged with killing roommate in NE Austin

AUSTIN – The roommate of a man who was found dead in a northeast Austin apartment on Aug. 31 has been charged with murder after police say he admitted to killing him.

The arrest affidavit for Dijon Reid, 27, states police were called to the residence he shared with Charles Edward Peterson III along the 7500 block of Berkman Drive around 12:45 p.m. Aug. 31 for a welfare check. Police said they found Peterson’s body under a pile of clothing in the master bedroom.

The affidavit states a friend of the victim called police after seeing items in the home in disarray and “bloody khaki pants in the bathroom sink and blood spatter on the master bedroom curtains.”

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s office said Sept. 1 that Peterson died from “homicide by strangulation and blunt force,” the affidavit noted.

Investigators tracked Reid to the 5800 block of Manor Road, where he was arrested Sept. 5 on an outstanding charge of failing to comply with sex offender registration. The affidavit stated officers found the victim’s driver’s license and credit card in Reid’s wallet. According to the affidavit, Reid admitted to investigators during an interview at APD headquarters that he “struck the victim with a piece of metal and covered his body.”

Reid was booked into the Travis County Jail, and is being held on combined $525,000 bond.
