AUSTIN - An Austin police officer, his wife and mother-in-law have been indicted on allegations of social security fraud, according to the Department of Justice.
According to a release, Roosevelt Granderson II, 44, Selica Granderson, 37, and Selica Granderson's mother Brenda Dawson, 52, were arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly collecting over $258,000 in federal benefits they weren't entitled to.
Selica Granderson is charged with three counts of theft of government funds; two counts of supplemental security income benefits fraud; and one count of bankruptcy fraud.
The indictment alleges that from April 2005 through May 2017, Selica Granderson collected more than $183,000 from the Social Security Administration's Supplemental Security Income program. From December 2012 through October 2016, Selica Granderson is accused of collecting $26,000 from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and $49,000 from Medicaid Insurance Program.
According to court documents, Selica and Roosevelt Granderson didn't report their marital status, living arrangements and income resources, which would have disqualified Selica Granderson from collecting benefits on behalf of her and Roosevelt Granderson's two children. Selica Granderson is also accused of filing for bankruptcy in 2015 without disclosing her marital status and the "true nature of her assets", the release said.
Federal authorities charged Roosevelt Granderson with making a false statement to an agency of the United States and misprision of felony. For instance, the indictment alleges he denied living in the same household and sharing a checking account with Selica Granderson after he was interviewed about his wife's alleged social security fraud.
Dawson is accused of filing fraudulent applications for the aforementioned government benefits on behalf of Selica Granderson's children in 2016.
Roosevelt and Selica Granderson were released on $10,000 bonds after appearing in court in Austin. Dawson is expected to appear in a Dallas courtroom Thursday.
No other hearings for the three have been scheduled as of Wednesday night June 21.
