With Black Friday just a week away, Wal-mart workers from stores and warehouses around the country are preparing to strike. The protests started on Wednesday and are expected to continue at 1,000 locations over the next week.

Employees from a Southern California warehouse went on strike Wednesday and were joined by workers in Seattle on Thursday, according to a post on the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union website. The strikes are planned by OUR Wal-mart, a workers' organization founded by Walmart Associates. Other strike locations include Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, and Washington D.C.

OUR Wal-mart said the strike is a protest of the company's attempts to silence employees that speak out about working conditions. Wal-mart workers say the major issues include manipulation of hours and benefits, discrimination against women and people of color, and working conditions in warehouses.

OUR Wal-mart is also calling for changes at the corporate level. OUR Wal-Mart member Jackie Goebel proposed a resolution to rein in executive pay at the 2012 annual meeting.
