AUSTIN -- The Texas Education Agency director for early childhood education says her office keeps few records on how pre-Kindergarten programs operate around the state.
Gina Day testified school districts are required to provide half-day pre-Kindergarten for some children. But she said the agency does not keep track of how many eligible children live in Texas or even how many pre-K classrooms operate around the state.
More than 600 school districts are suing the state for failing to adequately funding public schools. Day was a witness for the government explaining how pre-K programs operate in Texas.
She testified that only two people work on early childhood education at the agency after the Legislature eliminated several grant programs that supported pre-K. The state has also cut back on evaluations of those programs.
