SAN ANTONIO -- Taco Cabana is mourning the death of the man who started it all with a small taco stand 35 years ago.
Felix Stehling died on Monday. He was 87. Stehling founded the San Antonio-based restaurant chain that now boasts 162 locations in three states.
Taco Cabana posted word of his death on their official Facebook page on Monday:
"Back in 1978, he ignited what would soon become a Texas icon when he opened a small taco stand at the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand in San Antonio.
"As we enter our 35th anniversary year, we are proud of our rich history and the man that started it all."
He was reportedly forced out of the company in 1994 and is also credited with inventing the bean burger.
"Descanse en paz, Felix." the company said in its Facebook post which has since been "Liked" by thousands of Taco Cabana fans.
