AUSTIN --  H-E-B is celebrating Earth Day by giving away thousands of reusable shopping bags.

Officials with the grocery chain say 250,000 bags will be given to customers across the state. This is the fifth year the store has given away bags to encourage shoppers to keep recycling a top priority.

The specially designed commemorative Earth Day reusable shopping bags will be given to customers on Sunday, April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

H-E-B officials say they hope to eliminate more than one million plastic bags from the environment with this giveaway.

“At H-E-B, we look forward to Earth Day all year. Our bag giveaway promotion is a great way to help our customers make a small change that can add up to a big difference for our communities," said H-E-B Director of Environmental Affairs Susan Ghertner.

If you bring five or more plastic bags to recycle on Sunday, you will receive a coupon for one free reusable bag. Last year H-E-B customers recycled 4.1 million pounds of plastic bags.
