AUSTIN – Development on South Congress is forcing some of the popular food trailers there to other parts of Austin and beyond.
Rio Rancho Eatery in West Campus at Rio Grande and 26th Street is the latest example of the trailer migration.
“When we came out here it was already a trailer park ready to go. (It) had a lot of the amenities that we like with the water and free Wi-Fi,” said J.T. Gulledge with Mighty Cone, one of ten food trailers on the lot.
Gulledge says West Campus has been a success but it doesn’t compare to the foot traffic of South Congress.
“For the most part, it's not the families that we were seeing on Saturdays and Sundays and it's a little bit of a later crowd,” Gulledge said.
An 82,000 square foot, high-rise hotel is slated for the stretch of South Congress where some popular food trailers like Hey Cupcake! have been for nearly ten years.
West Campus is just one of the new homes for food trailers.
“I know there's one in San Marcos, I know there's a couple in Round Rock, maybe more now,” Gulledge said.
Food trailer vendors also told KVUE that another new hotspot for their unique brand of eateries can now be found off of Rainey Street in the downtown area.
