When an inspector from the Austin Travis County Health and Human Services Department dropped by La Morenita Mexican Restaurant at 2944 East 12th Street, there were enough critical violations for the restaurant to fail with a 53.

According to health department records, the inspector watched an employee rinse their hands in a sink, then begin preparing food.

The next time, it was one step more. The inspector watched an employee dip their hands in a bucket of soapy water, then begin preparing food. That hand sink was inaccessible because it was blocked by a cart storing dirty dishes.

There were several flies in the kitchen and dining area. And no towels in the men's room.

On the follow-up inspection La Morenita Mexican Restaurant passed with an 82.
