WATCH: Health inspectors find roaches, dirty cutting boards

We begin in downtown Austin at Katz's Deli on West Sixth Street. The restaurant failed its recent health inspection with a score of 64. Among the problems spotted by the inspector -- a live roach in the kitchen, an employee was observed loading dirty pans in dishwasher and not washing their hands before removing clean pans. The inspector also noted quote "badly marred cutting boards with food particles" embedded in the board and sandwiches placed directly on the board. On the required follow up inspection Katz's Deli passed with a score of 89.

Next stop, the New Mandarin Chinese Restaurant at 212 East Oltorf failed with a score of 68. Critical violations include an employee rinsing a soiled rag in the same sink as thawing chicken, resulting in wastewater flowing over the chicken. Other violations include an employee handling dirty dishes and then removing clean dishes from the washer without washing hands. The inspector also observed the manager and all of the kitchen employees failing to properly sanitize their hands. On the required follow up inspection New Mandarin Chinese Restaurant passed with a score of 88.

The Casa Grande restaurant at 5811 Berkman failed its recent inspection with a score of 68. Problems include chicken and beef cooling at the wrong temperature and dented cans. On the required follow up inspection Casa Grande passed with a score of 83.

And finally, the Vallarta Mexican restaurant on U.S. Highway 290 failed its inspection with a score of 63. Critical violations include live roaches in the kitchen, food particles inside deep groves of the cutting boards and improper cold holding of chicken fajitas overnight. On the required follow up inspection Vallarta Mexican Restaurant scored a passing 73.
