Dirty fingernails and no towels in the employee restroom are just some of the many problems spotted by Travis County health inspectors. Three Austin restaurants failed their most recent health inspection.
Las Lomas Mexican Restaurant, 730 West Stassney, failed its Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services inspection with a score of 50. Among the violations was an employee observed handling dirty utensils and then handling food and clean utensils. Las Lomas was also cited for inaccurate thermometers in the refrigerator, the accumulation of unknown particles on the spouts of the soda fountain and no soap or paper towels at the wait-staff hand sink. On the follow-up inspection, Las Lomas Mexican Restaurant scored an 81.
Kim Phung Chinese and Vietnamese Restaurant, 7601 North Lamar, failed its health inspection with a score of 54. The problems noted by the health inspector include a cook not washing his hands after handling a soiled rag. The cook was also cited for having unknown particles under their fingernails. There was also no towels in the employee restroom and food particles were found on tongs, cutting boards and inside the ice machine. On the required follow-up inspection, Kim Phung Chinese and Vietnamese Restaurant scored a 92.
In Downtown Austin, the Taverna, 258 West 2nd, failed its health inspection with a score of 67. Critical violations include cooked risotto, sliced ham and cooked potatoes without a discard date. There was also no hot water in the hand sink and a food processor that needed a thorough cleaning. On the required follow-up inspection, the Taverna scored a 92.
