PHOENIX, Arizona -- Savvy consumers always research cars and trucks before buying, and now researching just got a little easier.
There's a new "free" Safercar mobile app from the U.S. Department of Transportation that allows consumers to get important safety information at their fingertips.
The app allows users to search its five-star safety ratings for vehicles by make and model. Consumers can get immediate information about crash test ratings and compare them to other vehicles.
Consumers can also register their vehicles so they're directly notified if there is ever a safety problem.
App users can also submit complaints and stay on top of alerts and recalls for vehicles they already own.
The app also tells you the nearest inspection station for car seats.
