VIRGINIA BEACH -- Breastfeeding photos on Facebook are stirring up controversy.
Candy Thompson of Virginia Beach says the social media site is trying to put a stop to posting breastfeeding pictures on the page called This Milk Matters, where Moms across the world share tips on breastfeeding. Thompson says she joined the page for just that reason.
“I was completely clueless. If it wasn’t for the pictures and moms helping me on Facebook, I wouldn’t have gone through with breast feeding my daughter,” she said.
Last Monday, Thompson claims Facebook blocked some of the administrators from updating the page.
“This is about moms trying to be heard, and having a voice. We’re just being censored, completely censored.” she said. “We cannot let Facebook shun us because we post things they don’t like.”
Thompson said she did hear back from Facebook about the reason of blocking the photos.
“In 2008, Facebook said it changed their user standards on what is appropriate to be shown. They said that breastfeeding is beautiful.”
KVUE's sister station WVEC contacted Facebook and received this statement.
