AUSTIN -- On the same day Google announced it was bringing Google Fiber to Austin, AT&T announced its plans to build a gigabit fiber network as well.

On Tuesday AT&T said it plans to bring its Project VIP expansion of broadband access to Austin. The company plans to build a fiber optic infrastructure in Austin, capable of Internet speeds at 1 gigabit per second.

"Most encouraging is the recognition by government officials that policies which eliminate unnecessary regulation, lower costs and speed infrastructure deployment, can be a meaningful catalyst to additional investment in advanced networks which drives employment and economic growth," said AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson.

AT&T also said in a release that it will most likely give the same terms and conditions that Google is offering its Google Fiber users.
