Are the Cowboys in trouble?
08:28 PM CDT on Monday, October 13, 2008
DId you read my blog about the comparison between the Longhorns and Cowboys three weeks ago?
Great blog, if I do say.
But seriously... I decided to write that after I posed a question to some other media types that Monday at the UT weekly press conference.
Which team would be hurt the most by losing its starting quarterback? UT with Colt McCoy or the Cowboys with Tony Romo.
Now we'll find out about the Cowboys side.
It's a broken right pinkie finger for Romo. Of course, my first thought was... Roger Staubach threw great with a little finger that was bent sideways. But Romo's out for about four weeks.
And that's not all. Felix Jones has a bad hamstring. And all-world punter Mat McBriar is out for six to eight weeks with a broken foot. Jones is the game-breaker the Boys need at running back and returning kicks. Watch how much McBriar's loss hurts in field position. That guy averages almost 50 yards a punt! I remember in the "old days" of the Cowboys, when Danny White averaged about 40 and his longest every year was just over 50 (except for that one year he got a great roll against the Rams and it went about 73!). McBriar's replacement will cost the Boys about 10 yards in field position every time they punt.
The Rams, Tampa Bay, and the Giants are the next three on the schedule before a bye week.
Then it's Washington, San Fran, Seattle, and Pittsburgh.
And they finish up with the Giants, Baltimore, and Philly.
Right now, the playoffs look iffy. This for a team that looked like a cinch to make the Super Bowl just a month ago.
Oh how injuries change everything in the NFL.
