It's the circle of life

10:49 PM CDT on Monday, August 11, 2008

I was clicking through a sports message board today, looking for interesting stories, and saw someone talking about the new Nike ad. I have to admit... even though my life is TV, I don't always watch as much at home, and if I do, I often miss the commercials.

So I hit the link to watch it... and it's the old video of Marvin Gaye and this year's Dream Team. The ad's about 2.5 minutes long... because that's how long it took Gaye to sing the National Anthem.

And I immediately flashed back to my younger days at KVUE, when I was an intern in the mid-80s and the Sports Anchor pulled out this tape he'd kept from an NBA All-Star Game. It was Marvin Gaye's anthem.

That happens so often in life, doesn't it. Things, events, people... from years ago... come back into your life.

When I first learned how to swim... everyone wanted to swim like Mark Spitz. His seven gold medals in 1972 set the standard that Michael Phelps is trying to break. And ever since then, if I'm ever in the water and make any type of move that's similar to the butterfly... images of Mark Spitz have always flashed through my brain. Now... Spitz is in the news because he says he's not getting enough respect with Phelps trying to break his record.

The list goes on. I'm sure it happens to you, too.

A gymnast makes a move that causes an analyst to bring up an Olga Korbut or Nadia Comeneci (I bet I didn't spell that right!) and you remember something from years ago.

Maybe it's a play or a player from a football game. Or a moment in a baseball game. Or a restaurant you go to. Or a sale at your grocery store. It's not just about sports. Again... it's life.

My son's excited about going into Middle School this year. Of course, we called it Junior High in my day. But 6th grade is 6th grade... and it's quite a change from Elementary School. I remember going from Smith Elementary to Byrd Jr High and all of the excitement and anxiety. It's happening all again. He's got a transition camp the next couple of days and then goes the Saturday before school starts to find out about his classes and his locker.

9-41-15. That was my locker combination when I was in 6th grade.

Why do I remember? I don't know... because I can't remember any locker numbers from high school. But 6th grade was my first locker. It was a big step. Like what Brandon's going into now.

It's the circle of life!
