HOUSTON—A man in northwest Harris County says he fatally shot his son Tuesday after mistaking him to be a burglar trying to break inside his house, Harris County detectives said.

The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Derrick Casson told detectives that he confronted two men in his home that he believed were breaking in.

“He discharged his weapon at the men and they jumped from a second-story window,” Said Sgt. Robert Spurgon, with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division.

Casson told detectives that he had to be at work at 4 a.m., and he saw nothing else unusual, so he just went to work.  He said it was when he returned at about 1 p.m. that he found the body in the backyard.

Neighbors said they knew something was wrong early on.

”I was in my room and we heard some shot guns. Like big loud, like whenever you shoot the gun,” said Odalys Cruz, who lives across the street. ”We just heard like a truck speeding off.”

Neighbors said the son lives at the house off and on with his father.

So far, the deceased person has not been officially identified and no charges have been filed, investigators said.
