Many Hurricane Ike evacuees staying in Austin have only the clothes they brought with them and won't be able to go back to whatever homes they may have for weeks. Several local agencies are working to help them get the supplies they need.

One by one cars filled with evacuees backed into the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas, as volunteers loaded them full of supplies.

"The need here locally is huge," said Karla Cantu, Capital Area Food Bank.

Two families including the family dog evacuated and are staying with a relative in Elgin. They don't have much and say they appreciate all the help.

"We don't know what we have left if anything. We're praying for the best," said Judy Martin, who is from Galveston. "It's wonderful how everyone is trying to help. Everyone is coming together."

The food bank is taking donations around the clock until Friday, Sept. 19. The things they need the most are items such as pop top cans, diapers, dog food and personal care items.

“We wake up and we're thinking we're spared and our city is back to normal. The city really isn't back to normal yet, because we have evacuees staying in shelters. We have evacuees staying in families,” Cantu said.

Emergency officials said the number of people who want to help has been tremendous.

A woman dropped off crayons and coloring books for the kids and got a hug from Amy Elder of the Texas Interfaith Disaster Response.

"It was just a gift from the heart unsolicited and that's the great thing about Austin, they want to give and they want to do it right now," Elder said.

But Red Cross officials don't want people to drop off supplies at shelters.

"That means we have to take our man power away from caring for these individuals to process, clean, store and equitably find a way to distribute," said Marti McKellips, American Red Cross Volunteer.

While they want people to give, they say the quickest way to get help those in need is to donate money.

If you would like to help victims of Hurricane Ike, KVUE is teaming up with Randall's for the "Neighbors in Need" Hurricane Relief Drive.

Just go to any Randalls store --- the cashier can scan a special card and accept a donation in any amount you want.
