AUSTIN -- A man is in police custody after officers say he attacked a jogger.

The suspect in this case, Bobby Loftin, is charged with aggravated assault.

The victim, a woman in her 30s, was jogging along the Festival Beach hike and bike trail Monday when she says a man jumped out of the bushes and attacked her.

Austin Police say just before 10 am, the woman jogged past the water fountain near the 5 and a half mile marker, when 20 year old Loftin jumped out of the bushes and grabbed her.

“He did have a weapon, we're not disclosing what it was at this time,” said APD Corporal David Boyd. “She ended up fighting him off and getting away from him, there were several people in the area that saw this happen and everybody called 9-1-1 to alert us to it.”

Loftin ran off.  In moments an officer arrived to talk with the victim and those who saw the attack.

A few minutes later a witness told the officer he thought he saw him hiding in the bushes a short distance away.

Police took Loftin into custody.

And while the incident has some shaken up, APD says the hike and bike trail is still a safe place.

“We have our parks unit that's always out here monitoring the hike and bike trail, the Park Rangers are out riding on the trail so everybody's usually pretty safe out here,” Cpl. Boyd said.

The woman who was attacked has cuts and bruises, but will be okay.

Investigators are also seeing if they can link Loftin to any similar crimes.
