A new facility on Lady Bird Lake is officially open for business, and it's perfect for those who like to explore nature in Austin.
The new Waller Creek Boathouse features a view from a wrap-around deck, plus an expanded fitness room, cafe space, and impressive collection of kayaks.
"While the old building had some elements of style that date back to earlier Austin, I think the new facility is one that is still timely and potentially a timeless kind of replacement," said Austinite Cliff Steed.
Camille Job is the president of the Austin Rowing Club, the group that operates the boathouse.
"The facitilty that we were operating out of for the last 25 years was a nice little facility, but it stands right where they needed to put a stilling lagoon for the Waller Creek tunnel project," said Job.
So the City of Austin built this $3.5 million facility next to the old boathouse.
And after months of planning, the club hosted a day of free music, fitness classes, and of course, kayaking.
Dozens of people came out. From beginners just learning to row a boat, to the pros.
"It's open so people can see the types of activities that are happeneing and that allows us to provide more of a community boathouse," said Job.
