The eyes of Texas were upon some 7,500 entering freshmen and transfer students to the University of Texas Tuesday night for "Gone to Texas".

Since 1997, the Gone to Texas event has welcomed new students to UT, including freshmen and transfer students with a bevy of musical acts, speakers and the "Showband of the Southwest", the University of Texas Longhorn Marching Band.

"I'm kind of nervous I'm going to get lost," said Ronald Benion, a freshman from Houston.  "I went and looked at my classes today, but you could get lost."

"This is really overwhelming. So many people you know, like I'm from a small town, Azle, not that many people, and now it's like 50,000. It's awesome!", exclaimed Tyler Stevens, a freshman from Azle, just northwest of Fort Worth.

"Gone to Texas," was the phrase used by pioneers some 200 years ago who wrote the letters "G.T.T.", or Gone to Texas, on their homes after leaving for the Lone Star State.

The University of Texas won't have numbers on how many students have enrolled for the 2010/2011 school year for another two weeks.

Some entering freshmen who spoke to KVUE had some angst about starting the first day of classes on Wednesday.
