The University of Texas went on lockdown Tuesday morning as law enforcement searched for an armed gunman on campus.
Police say shots rang out after 8 a.m. The University of Texas sent a text message to students at 8:21 a.m. alerting them that there was an armed suspect at Perry-Castaneda Library.
The text messages continued to update students throughout the day. At 8:45 and 10:18 UT warned students to find shelter. One minute later, UT announced all campus classes were canceled.
“The University has a very good system of dealing with these types of crises. I feel pretty safe,” said UT graduate student Tierney Ahrold.
By 12:10 in the afternoon, the University had given students the all clear, and urged students who lived in residence halls to return to them.
The University also sounded sirens throughout the morning to warn students and staff about armed gunman.
“It was a good response. We are very fortunate in the fact no one else was injured but the lone gunman,” said UT Campus Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom.
UT students forced to evacuate Tuesday morning were allowed to return to their dorms Tuesday afternoon.
Everyone is asked to avoid the active crime scene at the Perry-Castaneda Library on campus.
The University plans to resume classes normally Wednesday morning.
