AUSTIN -- University of Texas police said a scare on campus last week has revealed a problem with the university's text alert system.
Officers arrested a student wearing a gas mask and carrying what turned out to be a plastic training weapon on Friday.
The student told officers he was "working out." He doesn't face charges.
After the incident some students said they never got an alert. University police said those students' parents may have tried to sign up for the alerts themselves which knocked their children's cell numbers out of the system.
Police said their text alert system is meant for students and staff only. Parents can sign up for social media updates through the Texas Exes' social media channels.
