KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The United States Army is reporting the death of an Army specialist from Round Rock over the weekend.

Alex Hernandez, 21, was found unresponsive in his room in Kandahar Province of Afghanistan Saturday. Alex Hernandez was married to Tyasia Pompy Hernandez.

While Hernandez’ death is still under investigation, the tragedy calls attention to military suicides which, according to the U.S. Army, went up 80 percent between 2004 and 2008.

In March 2010 the Army released a suicide prevention video hoping to curb the trend.

Alex Hernandez attended Bastrop High School in 2007 and graduated from Lanier High School in Austin in 2009. The U.S. Army has not released details regarding Alex Hernandez’s funeral arrangements.
