Thousands without power on Christmas Day

HOUSTON -- CenterPoint Energy reported thousands of customers were without power for hours on Christmas Day.

Around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, as many as 75,000 people were without power. Six hours later the number dropped to about 15,000, but the number surged again at 6:00 p.m.

Interstate 45 reopened to traffic in Huntsville Tuesday morning after all lanes were temporarily shut down near mile marker 118 for downed power lines.

A Tornado Watch was in effect until 4:00 p.m Tuesday afternoon for Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller and Wharton counties.

By Wednesday morning, the number of CenterPoint customers without electricity was down to about 3,000.
