WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement in honor of Juneteenth, being celebrated in Texas on June 19.
Sen. Cornyn is sponsoring a Senate resolution that recognizes the historic significance of Juneteenth Independence Day, and the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the State of Texas in 1865.
“I join with all Texans in celebrating Juneteenth, an observance that began in our state, to commemorate the emancipation of all slaves in the United States.
“As we mark this historic day, let us pay tribute to all the men and women who have fought and sacrificed to defend our values and ensure our freedom."
